Welcome back to another great school year at Knollwood! The third grade students have been building classroom community as they continue to get to know one another. Our students are participating in many cooperative activities, which allows for them to recognize the similarities and differences between each other. These activities are beneficial as we lead into our first unit in social studies, Communities.
We are excited to begin our new language arts program, Reading Workshop. The first unit will teach students how to build a powerful reading life. We have begun to discuss the importance of choosing “just right” books and recognizing what a special experience reading can be. The students will work on setting up a successful reading life outside of the classroom, as well.
We have begun our first Go Math unit, using addition and subtraction skills. The students will be using these operations to solve multi-step word problems. To reinforce these skills at home, we recommend the students use flashcards to review addition and subtraction facts.
The students are learning how to think like a scientist in our first science unit. We will begin to question what we see, observe our surroundings, and experiment to test our hypotheses. We look forward to working with lab partners to use models and investigate. The students will also be experiencing digital labs on our interactive whiteboards.
It will be a pleasure to meet you at Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. We look forward to a successful and exciting 2016-2017 school year!
