3rd Grade

Third Grade – Third Grade – Churchland Elementary School

Welcome back to another great school year at Knollwood!  It is wonderful to begin the year with normalcy. The third-grade students have been building a classroom community as they continue to get to know one another. These activities were beneficial when we led into our first unit in Social Studies, Communities.

In unit 1 of Reader’s Workshop, our students have learned to find a good reading spot, check that books are on their “just right” reading level, and to read books as if they are gold. The students are charting their reading progress and setting their own reading goals.

We are excited to begin our first unit in Writer’s Workshop. The first unit will teach students how to craft true stories, these writings include people, places, and things that are important to them.  Please encourage your child to continue to write independently at home as well.

In Math, we have been adding and subtracting within 1,000, which includes rounding, estimating sums, mental math strategies, as well as other strategies to add and subtract. Please remind your child to utilize the Reflex program and use flashcards to review addition and subtraction facts.

The students are learning how to think like an engineer in our first Science unit. We are working on defining problems and designing solutions to these problems. We look forward to conducting science labs to reinforce the concepts presented in the lessons.

It was a pleasure to meet you at Back to School Night.  We look forward to a successful and exciting 2022-2023 school year!
