SEL

On March 6, 2026, organizations like The Urban Assembly and SEL4US invite communities around the world 🌎 to celebrate the power and importance of Social Emotional Learning (SEL)!

🌟 What is SEL?

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults:

  • 💛 Understand and manage their emotions

  • 🎯 Set and achieve positive goals

  • 🤝 Feel and show empathy for others

  • 💬 Establish and maintain positive relationships

  • ✅ Make responsible decisions

Simply put… SEL is a lifelong skill! 💪✨

🏡 What Can You Do at Home?

Here are some simple and meaningful ways to support SEL at home:

1️⃣ Model Healthy Emotions

Children are always watching and learning from us 👀. Use your words to express how you feel in a calm and respectful way.

Try using “Bugs and Wishes” 🐞✨

Example:

“It bugs me when you yell at me. I wish you would use a softer voice.”

This helps children learn how to express feelings appropriately.

2️⃣ Teach Empathy 💕

While watching a show or movie together 🎬, pause and ask:

  • “How is the character feeling?”

  • “How would you feel if that happened to you?”

These conversations help children recognize emotions, understand social cues, and develop compassion for others.

3️⃣ Build Self-Awareness 🌈

Ask fun and thoughtful questions like:

  • What’s your favorite food or activity?

  • What three items would you bring to a deserted island? 🏝️

These conversations build self-awareness, communication skills, and turn-taking.

4️⃣ Practice Mindful Breathing 🧘‍♀️🌬️

Mindful breathing helps calm both the mind and body.

Try these favorites:

🍕 Cool Off the Pizza

Pretend there’s a hot slice of pizza in front of you!

  • Slowly breathe in to smell the pizza

  • Gently breathe out to cool it down

🫧 Bubble Breathing

If you have bubbles, even better!

  • Take a slow breath in

  • Slowly breathe out as if you’re blowing bubbles

Simple breathing exercises can make a big difference in helping children regulate their emotions.

Let’s work together to support the whole child....socially, emotionally, and academically! 💙✨
